Silhouette CC Bird

I think my mojo has officially left the building. I *kinda* like this card, but feel like it needs something else, and can't figure out what. *sigh*

So this finishes the last of the DTGD08 challenges, Joan Ervin's silhouette challenge, and is combined with this week's Color Challenge (CC177) from Emily Giovanni (aka emilymomto3boys) - Groovy Guava, Sahara Sand, and Whisper White.

I cut two ovals using my Coluzzle, and then put a scallop around the outer oval using my corner rounder punch. The scallops didn't meet, however, so I had to figure out a way to cover up the gap...hence the ribbon placement. So, I knew I needed the ribbon to go *over* the scalloped oval and *under* the guava oval, and *still* glued the two together, without any ribbon. grrrr.... So, I cut slits along the guava oval's edge for the ribbon to be fed through, and cut a slit at the card's fold for it to go around the front panel (because I also neglected to cut/score my paper for a 'typical' card). Yeah, seriously struggled with this one!

So, what do you think? Any ideas on what to add? Hope you all are having a great day!
~Michelle

Cupcake double challenge and BRAK

First up, the cupcake card! This one was to fulfill 2 DTGD08 challenges: Taylor's (aka tayloredexpressions) Cupcake challenge, and Rose Ann's (aka cutterscallous) Flap Card challenge. I was inspired to make the swooping shape of the flap after watching Kristina's Make a Card Monday this week, and used my oval Coluzzle template to cut it, then cut a matching, longer Chocolate Chip layer to emphasize the shape. Then I repeated it by cutting a smaller, full oval to place my cupcake on. A stamped sentiment, and few 'bling' brads, and the card was done. Seriously took me 10 minutes, most of which was spent finding my cupcake cut-outs and my Coluzzle. Easy peasy lemon squeezy (as my DS would say)!

Next up is the *beautiful* Birthday card my sweet friend Melinda (aka passionfruit) made for me! Isn't it fantastic? *smiles*
It's a gate-fold style card, and the main image panel goes across both panels and has a Velcro closure on the back of the right side to keep the card closed. It doesn't show very well in either pic, but the brown stripe across the card is made of amate paper, an amazing hand-made bark paper made in Mexico. I'm lucky enough to have some (a gift from Melinda when she was in Mexico a few years ago) that I've been hoarding. The texture of it is amazing, and I don't want to use it up! (Which is kinda silly, because Mel goes there a couple times a year, and I'm sure she'd pick some up for me if I asked!)
Thank you such much Melinda! I absolutely *LOVE* it...it's going on my inspiration board *wink*

Thanks for stopping by today! Have a fantastic Thursday!
~Michelle

French Shop Girl (DTGD08 challenge card)

Warning: this is another long post, but I think it's needed for this card! *smiles*

Another card for the Dare to Get Dirty Challenge at SCS. This one was from Kittie Caracciolo (aka Kittie747), and the challenge was to "Make a Scene"...a scenic card. Kittie is an absolute master at this type of card. She stamps a little vignette, draws in a tree and grass, stamps leaves, fills in with a stipple brush, and stencils clouds across the sky. Truly, she is an artist...and I was nervous to even try!

One of my biggest hindrances for this challenge was that I don't have any of those 'type' of stamps. I don't have little vignette stamps or leaf stamps or tiny flowers. I tend to gravitate toward either large, bold stamps, or more vintage/funky sorts of stamps. So, after days of thinking on what I would do, this scene materialized in my mind...not a 'Kittie-style' outdoor scene, but something I could actually do: an architectural scene with one of my vintage sewing pattern girls to greet!

Since I knew I wanted at shop window, and this girl stamp is fairly large (she's about 5" tall!), I decided to combine Kittie's challenge with Amy Rohla's challenge to make a 3 1/4" x 6 1/2" card that incorporated a clear element. (You can't really tell from the photos, but I did put acetate in that window...I just somehow managed to *not* get an obvious reflection!)
The French curtains were stamped on a polka-dotted blue paper. I also paper-pieced the dress on my French shopkeeper, stamping once on white and coloring with blender pens, and once on this fabric-patterned paper. The window was cut from Bordering Blue cardstock, the mullions were pieced in, and the whole thing was backed with acetate. Then I used my blender pen with Bordering Blue and Not Quite Navy to add shadows to the mullions so it'd look more 3-D. I added the curtains inside then window, then put the whole panel on dimensionals, over a white panel stamped with a dress form and clock (for the inside of the shop).

The little flower box took me much longer, since it's not something I've ever tried to do before! This is the part that is most Kittie-like, though *wink* I drew in the bottom and part of the sides of my box in a navy Zig Writer, then began stamping with the leaves and flowers from Carte Postale. I rock-and-rolled the flowers in Apricot Appeal and Pumpkin Pie, and the leaves in Old Olive and Always Artichoke. Then I went back in with a sponge to fill in with Old Olive, then a blender pen to color in the leaves. *Then* I decided it didn't quite fit with the rest of the scene, and went back and outlined the flowers with a Fawn Zig Writer. I finished drawing in the rest of the box, and colored it with blender pens to look like a weather, painted planter box. Finally, it was cut out and added to the front of my window, with the pattern girl over the very top.

*Whew!* Did you get all that? This card took me a seriously long time to make, but I love how it turned out! I don't think it will ever be given away though! *laugh* I might just frame it for some stamp-room artwork *wink*

Thanks for hanging in there with me, and for all the wonderful comments! (BTW, if any one knows how to keep the close-ups from looking so yellow, I'd love the advice!)
Have a great day!
~Michelle

Woohoo! Another triple challenge card!

I cranked out another one! This one actually didn't take me very long...and that was with two toddlers pulling apart my craft room as I worked! *wink*

I realized that I really need to send a card out to my DFIL...ASAP. They're currently vacationing in Maine, visiting family and attending family church camp, so I needed this a bit earlier than his actual birthday so that it could travel. Hooray for the Dirty DAre Challenges! They gave me the perfect jumping-off point: a sketch and a color scheme.

The sketch is by Jen del Muro (aka genie1314), well-known for her weekly Sketch For You To Try (SFYTT) challenges. This one was definitely a fun one to work with, and I'll be trying her sketches much for often!

The color scheme was a bit out of my comfort zone, witnessed by the fact that I only had one of the colors in cardstock! The color challenge (Real Red, Brilliant Blue, and Yoyo Yellow...I had to sub Summer Sun) came from Carole Burrage (aka TruCarMa), one of my favorite Dirty Girls. I check her blog daily for amazing cards, fun images and colors, and her famous wit. The woman makes me LOL!! I hope I did her some justice...her fun is part of the reason I chose these stamps to use.

The third challenge this covers is Sharon Johnson's (aka Notimetostamp). Her challenge was to "Stamp Simply". To be honest, it took me awhile to wrap my head around this one, so I just followed her step-by-step guidelines: start with a simple layout and a great image, use your favorite paper, add the image and a sentiment if desired, and finish it off with beautiful ribbon and other embellishments. My card doesn't quite fit with the lovely, elegant creations she sampled, but it does follow the rules! *wink*

I hope I've convinced you to join the Fan Club at SCS, if it's a site you love...it's really affordable ($24.95/year), and helps out the best stamping site on the internet! And, you get the benefit of the Dirty Dozen's creations each month!

Thanks for stopping by!
~Michelle

2 cards, 5 challenges!

Warning: This will probably be a long post! *wink*

So, last night I stayed up kinda late after the boys were in bed, and cranked out two more cards, covering 5 more challenges for the Dirty Dare '08. (Sorry in advance for the yellow-ish close-ups...I was playing with my new-to-me photo box, and I'm not sure why it does that, and couldn't quite fix it in GIMP).

The first is a clean, white card for JulieHRR's challenge that incorporates the pink and black color combo with faux stitching for Jacksonbelle's challenge:
This one kinda took me awhile, trying to figure out how to add that bow. It didn't look right off to the edge, since it'd cover the embossed frame, and it certainly wasn't going to go *over* my image. My solution was to cut two slits on either side of the flower's faux stitching, following the same shape, then weaving the ribbon through the card *behind* the image:
I must admit, I thought I was pretty clever, and it keeps that clean, beautiful white 'No-layer' style *smiles*

The second card I did covers tasher's sketch challenge (following the rules of keeping the orientation and adding a repeated element at the bottom!), Lauraly's vellum challenge, and scrapnextras's distressing/"Get Dirty" challenge:
*Love* how this card came out! I used dimensionals for the main panel, and for the vellum-covered flower. The colors were all inspired by the dp I used, Basic Grey's "Jubilee" from their Fruitcake line...Blue Bayou, Old Olive, Soft Sky, and River Rock all match the design *perfectly* (yay!) In addition to my distressing tool, I also used my fingernails to achieve a lighter distressing on the Basic Grey flowers.

Here's a close-up of the distressed vellum over the center flower:
Thanks for looking! Happy Monday!

Rock Star double Julia S challenge

Another double challenge card for the Dare to Get Dirty challenge!! Actually, this one fits two Julia S challenges...the weekly Ways to Use It challenge (this week's WT176 was to use a negative image), and the DTGD challenge of stitching on a card.
For my negative image, I used my big circle punch (mega? giga? I can't ever remember which is which...) to put a window in the front of my card, and then also used the negative chipboard piece from a star I had used in a previous project. For the DTGD challenge, I back-stitched around the circle to emphasize my focal point. Unfortunately, I didn't have any thread that matched, so I used yellow thread, and inked it with Always Artichoke to match the dark green polka dots...it works, but I'll warn you that you'll have some very inky fingers! LOL

Hope you enjoy! Off to do more challenges! (I think I may be addicted! *wink*)
Until later,
~Michelle
